Natural populations ranging from microbial communities to animal societies consist of many different individuals. Some individuals compete to exploit a shared resource, whereas others can help each other via byproducts. Such interactions affect the death or reproduction of individuals, thus shaping the composition of populations. In this colloquium, I will introduce the generalized Lotka-Volterra dynamics as a basic model for studying ecology and evolution. And then, I will move to a more specific question about the evolution of cooperation; the cooperators can survive even though they are expected to be extinct due to the extra cost to the cooperative moves. We showed that cooperation can naturally evolve by introducing empty space.
