‧강의 초록

Strong interaction is the most active force out of four fundamental forces that are observed in the Universe as its name suggests. It is responsible for 97% of the mass for the ordinary particles in the universe excluding dark matter and dark energy. On the other hands, however, it is the least understood for its property called confinement. For the past century, particle physicists have strived to break this confinement to reveal the nature of this force with numerous experiments, which resulted in the development of the Quantum Chromodynamics. In this colloquium, we will review the history of investigations on strong interaction, from the early 20th century to the most recent experiments at the LHC. Particular highlights will be made on the hard probes in the heavy-ion experiments at the LHC. In addition, the prototype ATTPC detector for the Korean rare isotope accelerator (RAON) will be introduced.
